Upcoming Ministry Leader Sabbaticals in 2024 & 2025

Written by College Park Church on

Caring for the church staff team in meaningful and creative ways is a priority of the College Park Church Elder Council. Their hope and prayer is for leaders’ long-term faithfulness and fruitfulness in ministry that, in turn, leads to long-term benefit to the College Park congregation.

In 2014 the elders established a set of practices for sabbaticals, or “renewal seasons,” whereby ministry leaders, after 7-8 years of consecutive service, are able to take an extended leave for spiritual and personal renewal. For example, in 2014 Pastor Mark took a renewal season that included a trip to the UK to study historic sites related to the English Reformation. A few years ago, the sabbatical policies were expanded to make Directors and Assistant Pastors also eligible for renewal seasons up to four weeks long. To date, sixteen pastors and leaders have taken a sabbatical, each of which was reviewed and overseen by the Elder HR Committee.

So that you can pray for these leaders, we wanted to make you aware of the 2024 sabbaticals and those planned for 2025.

2024 Sabbaticals:

  • Pastor Bob Martin, May 15-June 13, 2024
  • Chris Skinner, June 5-July 3, 2024
  • Asst. Pastor Jake Brothers, July 1-28, 2024
  • Tyler Ritz, fall 2024

2025 Sabbaticals:

  • Karen Pourcho, May 16-July 7, 2025
  • Pastor Jeff Ballard, June 1-August 21, 2025
  • *Pastor Paul Spilker, May 5-July 29, 2025
  • Pastor Alex Anderson, fall 2025

*This is one in particular for which we’d ask for your prayers: Lead Executive Pastor Paul Spilker is working with the elders to submit an application for a grant from the Lilly Endowment Clergy Renewal Program for his 2025 sabbatical. This program would provide funding beyond the College Park budget for, if possible, an Israel/Holy Land trip, other renewal activities for Pastor Paul, and activities and training to help develop leaders at College Park.

Could you please pray for these staff members and specifically for favor in the grant application for Pastor Paul? Questions about the renewal seasons can be sent to Lance Pfeifer, HR Committee Chairman, at hello@yourchurch.com.
