Praying God’s Word Over Men in Your Life

Written by Lori Stout on

The Bible describes godly men with words like leader, wise, loving, courageous, steadfast, trustworthy, patient, humble, and servant. As we look at the special men in our lives: fathers, brothers, husbands, children, and friends, don’t we desire that they would be full of these traits? God invites us to share in His work of growing godly character in those we love by praying for them. They need God’s extravagant grace and our faithful intercession on their behalf.

Lord, help (fill in the name of your loved one) “follow God’s example, and seek to be loving to others just as Christ loved him and gave himself up for him” (Ephesians 5:1-2).

We pray God Most High that the men in our lives “would choose their words carefully, words that are encouraging and helpful rather than hurtful and coarse (Ephesians 4:29).

Jesus our High Priest, we pray that they “would be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry”(James 1:19-20).

Heavenly Father, we pray that they would have “Godly wisdom which is pure, peaceful, considerate, humble, compassionate, fruitful, impartial, and sincere. May they be “Peacemakers producing a harvest of righteousness” (James 3:17-18).

We pray to you, Lord of all, that they might “prepare their minds for action, refusing to allow evil desires to control their thoughts and actions but inspired by the grace of God extended to them through Christ, to be self-controlled, seeking to be holy, set apart for whatever purpose Christ has for them” (1 Peter 1:13-15).

We pray God, our Savior, that he would avoid sexual immorality, conducting himself in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like those who do not know God” (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5).

Jesus Redeemer, we ask that he would seek to be “joyful always, praying continually; giving thanks in all circumstances for this is God’s will for him in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

Lord, we seek your face and petition from your word in Proverbs, that this man would be one, who:

  • Who fears the Lord and provides a secure fortress and refuge for his children” (Proverbs 14:26).
  • Builds his house, and through understanding establishes it and through knowledge fills its rooms with rare and beautiful treasure” (Proverbs 24:3-4).
  • Will not “conceal his sin and therefore not prosper, but would rather confess and renounce them, finding mercy. For blessed is the man who always fears the Lord, but he who hardens his heart falls into trouble” (Proverbs 28:13-14).

We pray into these truths Father that our loved one would soften his heart toward you and would listen to your commands and walk in your ways.

Lord, we pray that they “would not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But that their delight would be in the law of the Lord and on your law may he meditate day and night” (Psalm 1:1-2).

And surround them with godly men who “by their speech, conduct, love, faith and purity will be examples of what a godly man should be” (1 Tim. 4:12).

Finally, Lord, we give those special men in our lives over to you. We entrust them to you, please lead and guide them in your truth and grow them to become more like your son Jesus. Amen.

*Please note that verses have been paraphrased and pronouns have been changed to make the process of praying through particular portions of Scripture easier. Please look up the references listed in your own copy of God’s Word in order to read the text verbatim.**
