God Is With You

Psalm 91

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
    will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust.”

For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
    and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his pinions,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
You will not fear the terror of the night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
    nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.

A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
You will only look with your eyes
    and see the recompense of the wicked.

Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place—
    the Most High, who is my refuge—
10 no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
    no plague come near your tent.

11 For he will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will bear you up,
    lest you strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the adder;
    the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.

14 “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
    I will protect him, because he knows my name.
15 When he calls to me, I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble;
    I will rescue him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.”

Do you experience worry, discouragement, or fear? In those times, let Psalm 91 serve as a balm to your soul.

We Are Safe and Secure In Christ

The psalmist reminds us in verse 1 that, if we dwell in the shelter of the Most High, we can find safety and protection from the temptations of this world. The beginning verses serve as a constant and current reminder that God is holding us closely and guiding us day by day. His presence never leaves us, and he guards his people (v. 4). That protection is ours if we trust in the Lord and trust in his presence around us. Throughout the psalm, we are reassured of God’s protection. The psalmist ends with affirmations from God about his steadfast love and the fortress that he provides to us.

We are not alone in our walk no matter the blows of life that come our way. Friend, remember this psalm in times of uncertainty or distrust. The Lord is with you, and he cares deeply—he is your protection.

Christ Is Our Protection

Psalm 91 paints the picture that the Christian life has ups and downs that will either shake us or drive us closer to God. But despite what life sends our way, we can have confidence that God will keep his promise to always provide us with his protection and care.

Think about the circumstances in your life, both the good and the bad. As you reflect, look at how the Lord has not only guided you through those things, but how he has been your protector through it all. I exhort you to seek his fortress of protection and lean into his love and care for you when times are tough. We have a God who saves and protects his people, spiritually and physically, more than we can comprehend. Praise God!
