I’ve served in worship ministries in the local church for almost all of my adult life. A benefit of that has been learning to use worship music to help me stay focused in prayer. Below are eight songs that you can put in your playlist to help you do the same. The songs are arranged according to the A.C.T.S. method of prayer (adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication). However, you can use them however you wish.
1. “The Lord Our God” – Passion
This song reminds us of many of God’s praiseworthy attributes. The lines of the chorus say, “The Lord Our God is ever faithful / Through the ages, never changing.” These are great things to remember in times that seem to always change.
2. “Every Praise” – Hezekiah Walker
This energetic song reminds us that God is the most praise-worthy being. “Every praise is to our God / Every word of worship with one accord.” This song will get stuck in your head (in a good way).
3. “Lord, I Need You” – Matt Maher
This song says what we all need to say every day—that we need God. It is a declaration of desperation and understanding of grace with lines like “Where sin runs deep your grace is more,” and “My one defense, my righteousness / Oh God, how I need you.”
4. “Rock of Ages” – Page CXVI
This hymn reminds us of our great need for a Savior with every verse. The most powerful images might be conjured up by “Foul, I to the Fountain fly / Wash me, Savior, or I die.” It’s a comforting truth to know we serve a Savior who stands ready to cleanse us from our sins.
5. “We Give You Thanks” – All Sons & Daughters
This song does just what the title says–stirs us up to give God thanks. The chorus jumps right in with “Almighty God / Father of all mercies / We give You thanks / For all Your goodness / For how You love us/ We give You, we give You thanks.”
6. “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” – Travis Cottrell
Another hymn with beautiful lyrical imagery. “Hast thou not seen how thy desires ere have been granted in what He ordaineth?” reminds us to take stock of the many things we’ve been given by God.
7. “Promises” – Maverick City Music
This is a new song that is worth a listen because it strengthens our faith and courage to pray. It includes the lyrics “God from age to age, though the earth may pass away, Your word remains the same / Your history can prove there’s nothing You can’t do, You’re faithful and true.”
8. “Do it Again” – Shane & Shane
“Do it Again” reminds us of all the times God has come through for us, and it encourages us to ask him to “do it again.” It is a declaration of a prayer of faith. The first verse drills right into the disappointment of unanswered prayer but points us to hop: “Walking around these walls / I thought by now they’d fall / But you have never failed me yet.”
