Spring Break Backpacking

“If there were a little more silence, if we all kept quiet…maybe we could understand something.”
- Federico Fellini (1920-1993)
High school guys, girls, and their parents are invited to enjoy the beautiful outdoors on this backpacking adventure that will explore the Roan Highlands of the Appalachian Trail, meandering back and forth, up and down along the border of North Carolina and Tennessee. There is room for 30 people on this adventure. The group will leave from CPC early on the morning of April 2 and will return by dinner on April 6. Register here.
The grOve has done a few hiking and backpacking adventures in the past. There have been a couple trips to Kentucky's Red River Gorge, and we've also spent time at Indiana's Clifty Falls. See some photos of a past trip.
Outfitting for the grOve's Spring Break Appalachian Trail adventure will be provided by Twin Lakes Camp under the planning expertise of Jon Beight. Our trail guides are Paul Weaver, a youth pastor in Kokomo who has led dozens of backpacking trips for hundreds of students over two decades, and Karl Krukenberg, an engineer, husband, grOve volunteer and experienced hiker. Adult CPC female supervision will also be provided. Take a look at the Roan Highlands from one of trips that Paul led in 2010.
For $169, you receive the transportation, food, gear (trail-worthy backpack, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, cooking equipment, tent) and experienced guides necessary for this amazing week spent in nature. If you have trail-worthy gear that receives approval by Pastor Don, your cost can be as low as $119. Check with Don by March 18 to have your tent, pack and/or sleeping bag inspected. If approved, you will receive up to a $50 refund based on what gear you have.
This trip is open to high schoolers from College Park Church and their high school-aged friends. Parents who are up for the adventure, fun and memories should contact Pastor Don to see if they can join the group. The grOve would love to have some parents partner with us on this.
“I think the Devil has made it his business to monopolize on three elements: noise, hurry, crowds…Satan is quite aware of the power of silence.” - Jim Elliot (1927-1956)
The registration deadline for this event is March 11. Register here.
